# The Best Time of Year to Fix a Windshield Chip in Calgary

> September–October (before winter) and March–April (after) are the optimal windows. Calgary's freeze-thaw cycle and spring gravel season make timing matter more here than in most Canadian cities.

## Why timing matters in Calgary specifically

Three Calgary-specific factors:

1. **Chinook freeze-thaw cycles** — temperature can swing 20°C+ in a single day. Water in a chip freezes, expands, opens the crack. Cools, contracts, locks in. Repeat. A small chip in November can be a 30 cm crack by January.
2. **Spring gravel season** — March through May, road sand and gravel kicked up by traffic on Deerfoot, Stoney Trail, Crowchild. Peak chip-acquisition months.
3. **Construction year-round** — gravel trucks on the highway grid throw stones constantly.

## The two best windows

### September–October (before winter)

Fix any summer-acquired chips before the freeze-thaw season hits. A chip ignored from October to March is the #1 way Calgary drivers turn a $50 repair into a $400+ replacement.

**Ideal:** any time you notice a chip between mid-September and the first hard freeze.

### March–April (after winter)

Spring chips from gravel season. Fix them quickly, before the next freeze-thaw can spider them. Repair conditions are good — temperatures climbing, no rain/snow interrupting outdoor work.

## Worst time to delay

December–February. Multiple back-to-back freeze-thaw cycles. Each cycle widens any unrepaired chip slightly. By March, what was a star break can be a 20 cm running crack.

## Worst time to repair

If a chip is fresh AND temperature is below −10°C, mobile resin injection is harder (resin viscosity, glass surface temperature). We can still repair, but it takes longer and may need an indoor shaded space. Better to bring the car into a heated garage or wait for a warmer slot.
